Lots more Asbury Park " Come on, Rise up."

The Boss wrote "  I can hear the organ's song but the congregation's gone..My city of ruins"but our famous troubadour also added " Come on, rise up !"

Many people believe he wrote this heart wrenching song about the horrors of 9/11 but he actually wrote this for his lost city of Asbury Park and first performed it at a benefit for the resort.

Here are some wonderful old images of the boardwalk, the inside of Convention Hall and the Casino.

Come and on Rise Up

  1. Emil,
How old are these pictures of the convention hall? (The color ones.)

  3. Great photos, many of a by-gone. Things were so-much gentler, and more peaceful back then.

  4. Oh! I thought they were older. I'm so glad to see the Convention Hall still looking pretty good then. Thank you so much for sharing all this. I spent my summers in Ocean Grove and Asbury Park and it still holds such special memories for me.

  6. Anyone who has a chance should really visit Convention Hall while it's still around. Although they have replaced all of the windows and put on fresh paint, it still continues to decay.

The saline content of the air coming off the Atlantic takes a harsh toll on structures. Especially one like this which really wasn't designed to last as long as it has. Huge pieces of the building continue to fall off, and though they make every effort to patch it up, it's only a matter of time before a good sized chunk of the building falls onto someone during a concert or event and they are seriously hurt.

  7. Love the comments guys
Been getting about 200 views per post but the back and forth is most gratifying

    Cheers

  8. The differences between the "then" and "now" photos is quite interesting. Look at the nautical ornimentation on top of the Casino in the photo "APfour.jpg" and look at the current picture of the building--they are gone!

The hanging lamps in the mall between the Paramount Theatre and the Convention Hall are no longer present.

  9. Does anyone remember going into Convention Hall and seeing Mr. Peanut? The smells of the roasting nuts was so wonderful!

  10. I love my memories of Asbury Park! I used to belong to an organization that had their annual convention every year at the convention center. We would stay at the Berkley-Carteret Hotel. What a dump that was in the 70's! Great memories.

  11. My great uncle, Jerry Boa, was the electrician at the Convention Hall thru the 40's and 50's.
He ran the light and sound systems there and at the Paramount Theater and Casino.
